666666 AND COUNTING!!!!!!!!

January23

Hi To All My Creative Writers,

I’m sorry to be missing two club meetings in a row.  Both of my absenses are due to professional development, which is a good thing for you and me.  Right now ,I am attending a technology conference in Orlando.  We also missed the juniors last week, when they were practicing for their ring ceremony.  Don’t forget to check out their new rings and congratulate them.

I know Jackie will be checking to be sure you have your files up to date.  As you can see from the title of our blog, we only have six more meetings.  I suggest you go back to last week’s blog and look at the sites for two contests.  I would love for you to win and be published.  Also, there were many visuals posted on the last blog that you may still want to write about.

Use this time to be creative.  Reflect, try to keep calm and think about jotting down your ideas.  Don’t forget we do need art work.

I will see you next time.  Please be respectful of everyone’s quiet time. :)

Keep writing!!!!!!!

SEVEN AND COUNTING!!!!!! 7777777777777777777777

January11

Hi Everyone!

We only have seven more meetings and that includes this meeting.  What does that mean?  If you want to be published, you need to use this time to write and send your best to Jackie or me.  We are sorting through your files now in order to decide what will be “keepers”.

If you would like to be recognized, published, and get a little richer, then go to this site http://www.poeticpower.com/contest.php, and decide if you would like to enter the poetry or essay contest.  We have had several winners in the past. These students have been recognized at AHN’s Honors Award assembly.Writers were published in an anthology of poetry entitled, Creative Communications.  What a great bit of information to put on your college resume.

There is also a contest for juniors at http://www.ncte.org/library/NCTEFiles/About/Awards/AA12/2012_AA_Brochure.pdf, which is sponsored by a very well-known national organization, which judges our magazine each year and gives us an award. Please check this out, even if you are not a junior this year, you may want to consider another time.

I’m sorry that I was not here for you today, but I am practicing with the juniors for their ring ceremony in the Brady Center.  I know you will be quiet and respectful of everyone’s reflective writing time. :)

I’m looking forward to great literary works.

Your Moderator,

PLO

MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS

November28

Merry Christmas to All!!!

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and a restful one.  We are now on the homestretch for the next holdiday break.  First, we must be sure our portfolio is in order before we leave for the holdidays.  Jackie wants to work on your files, so you need to do your best and send her your work.

If you are ready to work on something new, let’s think about creating a new version of an old Christmas story.  For example, you could begin your story, “Twas the night before Christmas and …. You finish the rest of the story and make it your own.  Give it a try!

If this doesn’t make you happy, look back at the other Posts on the blog and see if there is something else you would like to write about.  You are always welcome to experiement on your own.

May you and your family have a very blessed and holy Christmas.

I hope your exams go well.  I will be looking forward to seeing you on January 4th, which is our next meeting.

Merry Christmas,

Mrs. Loesekann

Honoring our Veterans!!!!

November9

Good Afternoon!!!

I first want to thank Maggie Brekka,Hilda Delgado, Vallie Joseph and Daryl Sutphin-Garcia for working the Excursions’ table at Open House this past Sunday.  I appreciate your time, especially on a weekend, to provide information to other creative writers who may be interested in our club for next year.  I know so many of you had other committments and were unable to attend our table.  I did send your names to Sister Plumb so you would receive service hours.

On another note, this Friday is Veteran’s Day and wewill be honoring our veterans at a Mass.  Please take the time today to express your thoughts in a poem or a prayer about our veterans.  I would like to include your poem in  this year’s magazine.  Perhaps we can use your poem/prayer for next year’s Mass.

Reminders:

Be sure to read the writings from our last blog.

Work on your layouts and send to me or Jackie.

Thank you for keeping a quiet atmosphere while we reflect and write.

I love you all!!!!!

PROMPTS GALORE!!!!!

October25

HI THERE EVERYONE!!!

We had a wonderful National Day of Writing on October 20th in our English classes. Thanks to all who took the time after school last week to put together a commercial on the Morning Program for this special day.  I appreciate all your energy and creativity.  You all are the BEST!!!! If anyone would like to share their stories/poems that you wrote in class for this day, please be sure you add them to our blog.

I have included lots of prompts on this blog for you to use today.  Please peruse and start writing.  Writing takes quiet time. Please be sure we create the right atmosphere so we can all do our best. I have candy for you to nibble on while you are writing and blogging. Of course, only if you are quiet.

Creative Writing Exercises Compiled by Catherine Reid from Warren Wilson College

Creative writing exercises, like any kind of warm-up routine before playing a sport or a musical instrument, help loosen up your imagination while honing your writing muscles. The goals of the prompts below: clear, lively writing that uses specific images, well-chosen verbs and precise nouns, that “shows, rather than tells,” and that avoids clichés.

Though the exercises are more fun done with two or more people, each can be done alone. A suggested format: Choose a prompt from the list below. Weigh a few possibilities. Then write without interruption for 12-15 minutes.

If, while writing, you’re at a loss for material, shift to another of the five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste); or shift your perspective from high to low, from close to far away; or consider the journalist’s five questions—who, what, when, where, why.

 The prompts:

1) Describe a “first”  first time driving a car, first big success, first roller coaster ride, first time in this setting). Include as many details as possible, being sure to include an aspect relating to each of the five senses.

2) Describe a memorable event, positive or negative, and how it felt to you, but do not name the feeling. Instead, tell how it felt in your body (damp hands, metallic taste, tight throat, wobbly knees, etc.).

3) Create a story using words of one-syllable only, beginning with a phrase such as:

“The last time I saw her, she…”

“From the back of the truck…”

“On the night of the full moon…”

“The one thing I know for sure…”

4) Describe a significant place, allowing the details to reveal why the place matters. Describe it from a tree or rooftop or from a hawk’s point of view. Describe it from the height of a dog or a turtle.

5) Write the map to where you live. Start as close or as far from your home as you wish.

6) Describe a significant person (teacher, neighbor, mentor, coach, parent, sibling, sweetheart) with as many physical details as possible, but no clichés! (If you’ve heard the expression before, don’t use it.)

7) Write about your first name—why you were given it, what associations or stories are attached to it, what you think or know it means. Do the same for your last name. Given the chance, what name would you give yourself?

8) Describe a presence in your house (childhood home/current place of residence)—a person, a pet, a piece of furniture, an illness, a secret. Use all five senses. Be as detailed as possible.

9) Recall a photograph from your life and describe it in a way that suggests (but doesn’t specifically name) why it matters. (Remember the creative writer’s adage, “Show, don’t tell.”) Describe what happened either just before or just after the photo was taken.

10) Choose a photograph from a published collection of black-and-whites, of humans in uncertain conditions. Write the story of one of the individuals or one of the groupings.

11) Narrate a story about a person or a family member, a story that’s been passed down or ritualized; a story about yourself. Embellish, if so desired, or contrast the story with what you know to be the “true” account.

12) Describe a routine or holiday ritual, using present tense verbs.

13) Describe a routine or holiday ritual, using the 2nd person “you”:

For example, “You stand in the steaming kitchen with people you haven’t seen in almost a year. You wish your shirt didn’t have that tiny stain on the cuff. You wish your aunt’s laugh wasn’t quite so brittle. Feet stomp on the porch and you hurry to let your tall uncle in, forgetting to keep the dog from escaping outside…”

14) Choose a moral dilemma (for example, you see someone pocket several items at a CVS;you are in the car with people you don’t know very well and the driver hits a dog that ran into the road; etc) and explain what you would do.  More importantly, explain why you would do it. What do you know about yourself that accounts for such a decision?

15) Create a short story that is 26 sentences long, each sentence beginning with the next letter of the alphabet. (Add other, arbitrary conditions, if desired, such as one sentence should be one-word long; there should be one question mark, one quotation, etc.) Rigid rules often produce fascinating results—such as with well-written sonnets, which have 14 lines and tight rhyme schemes, each line governed by a specific number of syllables and alternating stressed and unstressed syllables.

16) Create a still-life in the room that implies a dramatic moment (e.g. an overturned chair, several balled-up pieces of paper, an open map, a torn envelope, a set of keys, a silk scarf). Describe what happened either just before or just after that moment.

17) Review a section from the Police Beat or Classified Ads of a local newspaper. Choose one and tell the story behind it.

18) Describe the room of one of the following: a high school student about to drop out; a cashier who has just won the lottery; a faded movie star who still thinks she’s famous; a paranoid person, etc

19) Create a how-to manual for something you can do well (clean a fish, change a flat tire, restring a guitar, make sushi, shop for groceries). Describe the process so that someone else could complete the task based on your directions. Use present tense verbs.

20) Come up with a list of nouns and a second list of verbs, all of one syllable each. Describe a scene or situation, using a minimum of ten words from each list.

AFTER ALL THIS READING, I HOPE YOU HAVE CHOSEN AT LEAST ONE PROMPT.  PLEASE WORK ON YOUR LAYOUT AND BIO.  WE ARE STILL MISSING MANY BIOS.

HAPPY WRITING!!!!!!

YOUR MODERATOR…MRS. LOESEKANN

CELEBRATE NATIONAL DAY ON WRITING IN OCTOBER

October3

Hello Excursion Members!

This month has a very special day that we dedicate to writing. October 20 has been named the National Day on Writing.  Go to this site http://www.ncte.org/dayonwriting, and you can post your personal writings. If you have any suggestions for celebrating this day, or would like to make a video for the morning show , please let Jackie or I know by the close of this meeting. I would like some volunteers to help with making the video.  Perhaps we can meet next Wednesday(half day) and I will buy you lunch.  Let me know before the end of this club time. :)

I only have four members who have created their “About the Author” page and sent it to me at ploesekann@holynamestpa.org.  Don’t worry about your picture, because we will get your yearbook picture to post on your page. Everyone must send me something about yourself.  Remind us during club time, and we will show you what has been written so far.

You all have been busy blogging, and we have some prizes to give out today for the best poem, story, or layout page. Congratulations!!

Here are some ideas for you to work on today:

1.  Create your “About the Author” page.

2. Go to the web site for posting your writing for the National Day of Writing (http://www.ncte.org/dayonwriting)

3.  Look for a contest to enter.

4.  Post your poetry on this blog.

5. Create your layout page.

HAPPY SEPTEMBER!!!

September18

Hi Members!!!

Thank you for posting your information on the About New Members Page,  so we will all get to know one another.  I enjoyed reading about you, so be sure you take the time now to get to know one another.

I would like for you to view the different contests that are available.  Check out Pages to the right and look for Writing Contests. You may also know some contests that are not posted and would like to enter.  If so, please let me know, if there is a contest we should be reviewing.  Everyone in this club should be wanting to write with the idea that you want to be published in our literary magazine.  The extra bonus would be if you enter a contest and win.  Gabriel Kelly, a current member of Excursions, entered the Poetic Communications Contest and became published in a bound poetry book.  Please ask her about her poem and the contest.

Remember, our magazine crosses over into other academic areas.  We will review writings that you have submitted to other teachers other than English.  When NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) reviews our magazine for an award, they look for writings on different subject areas.  For example, you could enter a personal opinion on a subject, a personal memoir, a college application essay, a description of a piece of original art work, poetry, a play, a short story (fiction or nonfiction),etc.

Relax…treat yourself and explore what you would like to write about.

Post on the blog and I will read and let others enjoy reading it also.

Next time we meet, I will have prizes for the best writing that has been posted on this September blog.

Writing Rocks….

Welcome Members of Excursions 2011-2012

September4

Welcome Members of Excursions,

I would like to welcome back the faithful members of Excursions, and extend a warm welcome to our new members.  I am looking forward to working with you this year on the best magazine yet.  We should know in January how last year’s magazine was critiqued, and hopefully awarded.  As you know, each year we have been sending the magazine to NCTE (National Council for Teachers of English) that awards student literary magazines.  For the past eleven years, we have received an award of excellence.  It is quit an accomplishment, and we should be very proud of continuing to do our best.  You should have your own copy of May’s edition.  If you need one, please let me know.

If you are interested in buying a t-shirt to advertise our club, we will be passing information to you today.  Please be sure to honor the deadline date (next club meeting) for payment.

Every time we meet, please check plozblog for your assignment and post your writing before you leave.  If you need more time or are inspired after the meeting, be sure to post your ideas before the next meeting.  After I review your post, I will allow for all members to read what you have posted. Remember to only post what is appropriate for all to read.

Please go to the section called “About Our Members” and tell us something about yourself.  We want to get to know each other.  You can place an avatar or a picture of yourself.  Please put your full name, not a nickname or leave your name blank.

I’m looking forward to reading your creative poetry, essays, stories, and other writings you want to share with us.  If they don’t fit on the blog, please remember to send your writings to me at the following e-mail address: ploesekann@holynamestpa.org.

Happy Writing…….We are a special club!!! Congratualtions!!!
